This is
how the Wee Folk came to be in Salley's own words:
"Becoming
involved in my children's Waldorf School made me more aware of the
value of creative and imaginative play in the classroom and in life.
Our school's parent handwork group introduced me to the wonderful
wool felt and fleece that now is a staple ingredient in my artwork...Recently,
I have been taking photographs of various fairies, transportingthem
around in a basket, looking for suitable natural settings outside.Friends
drive by and catch me out on a hazy day, taking pictures at local
marshes, gardens and beaches. Strangers don't see the little fairies
andthink that I'm just photographing flowers. My sons are embarrassed
to see meat their high school, gathering acorn caps from under oak
trees, bending over with a basket on my arm, "like a peasant
woman", as my son Peter says.I suppose I am destined to become
even more eccentric as time goes on. But, I am comforted by the
knowledge that creating art keeps my imagination alive and makes
me feel whole and happy." ~ Salley
